Principal’s News

How do you show what you know? Teachers are strongly aware that each of their students has a preferred learning style – and one size definitely does not fit all. Good teaching has to appeal to all the senses – visual, auditory and tactile elements are all part of the equation. Equally direct teacher instruction is crucial to establish a baseline of shared knowledge and understanding of key skills and concepts. Time should also be devoted to enquiry-based learning where students have the chance to refine their understanding and application of techniques through games and other ‘hands on’ actvities and action research. Eventually the time comes when teachers need students to show what they know – but is it good enough just to give them a pen and paper test? The answer is a resounding ‘NO!’. Some children may not be great readers and yet if given the chance to talk through what they have learned will show a surprising level of knowledge, skill and insight into the topic being assessed. Others will be more at home representing what they have learned in visual form. Still others might feel most comfortable preparing a powerpoint presentation or using concrete materials of some kind to show what they know and what they have understood from the teaching and learning activities they have undertaken. The lesson here is a relatively simple one. While standardised tests such as ‘I can do Maths’ or the South Australian Spelling test or even NAPLAN provide very specific and useful data both for teachers and parents, they need to be interpreted contextually. Any and all assessment activities are but a snapshot at a point in time. The whole picture of student achievement can be most accurately shown by comparing performance on a range of tasks over time.

Change is always challenging and currently we are planning for some very significant changes ahead in 2012. Opening a new building, completing the long-awaited playfield, adding new classes in many different Year groups and of course staffing changes to support the growth. In addition over the past six months the School Council, Executive Team and staff have been discussing and planning for the addition of a fourth House team and a change in names that more closely reflects the Australian heart of our growing international school.  While change is challenging and at times can be unsettling, it is also exciting and in all of these issues change reflects the growing reputation and success of Avondale Grammar School.

Preschool Takes a step Up….
This week on Wednesday morning Students from Ruby and Sapphire spent some thoroughly enjoyable time in the Prep classrooms having a little taste of what it will be like to take that step up in 2012. Meanwhile the current Prep students had a marvellous time enjoying some reminiscing and drama activities with the Preschool teaching team. It seems that everyone had a fantastic time and there were many animated conversations around the dinner table that night.

Super Cambodia – Avondale’s superheroes do a super job for Temple Garden Foundation!
On Thursday thanks to the Avondale family’s collective generosity the super sum of $1590 was raised from the bring and buy sale. The super heroes theme was entered into by one and all with a marvellous range of characters being represented and some obvious hard work done by children and parents to create some great original outfits.  Thanks everyone for getting into the spirit and particular thanks to the indefatiguable Ms Collins and the SRC for their enthusiasm and commitment in organising this great finale to an outstanding year of Social Service to others far less fortunate.

Exapnsion 2012

1. How will security be handled?
Sign in and sign out facilities with a security guard in attendance will be available at both the Early Learning and Primary Centres. We are currently negotiating with LHN around the issue of pool style security fencing for the perimeter of the Primary Centre. There will be telephone and intercom communications between the two buildings to assist not only with regular information exchange but also in case of emergencies of any kind. As always the safety of students will continue to be our Number One priority.

2. How will the cohesiveness of the Avondale school family be maintained?
Events such as Year 3 to 6 and Prep to Year 6 assemblies will continue to occur in the Multi-Purpose Hall. Space will be at a premium, but as has previously been the case parents will be welcome to attend. The Treasure Keepers program will continue to be an active element of the School’s pastoral care program and the Years 5 and 6 School leaders will, as they do now, travel to the Early Learning Centre to run games and activities with Prep to Year 2 classes based around each core value. The SRC will contine to meet and may well alternate in venue between the Early Learning and Primary Centres. Staff will attend staff meetings and other less formal social gatherings in both buildings in order to ensure that a strong sense of a united and cohesive community is maintained.

Principal’s News

I hope that many parents have enjoyed the various Class Assemblies that have taken place this week, and of course more are to come next week as well. They represent the opportunity to reflect on a year’s growth and development and to celebrate individual as well as corporate achievement in a more intimate setting. 2011 has seen significant growth and development for all Avondale students. Thanks to our dedicated class teachers who not only guide, teach and encourage your children on a daily basis but who have also put much time, energy and effort into preparing these special celebrations.

In relation to the International Schools Cross Country results I want to apologise for my ‘foot in mouth’ disease. Particularly to Sam Garbellini who performed brillinatly and obtained second place in the 8 Years boys event. Your mighty effort was amazing Sam – well done. Please ensure that you read the full set of results in the Sports report from Mrs Dundas.

Class Placement 2012
To all those parents who have already responded to the letter sent home yesterday regarding class placement for 2012 – many thanks. All information should be directed to the Principal via email at acoote@avondalegs.com.sg . Please send through this information as soon as possible as staff are currently working on class placements for next year.

Preschool to Prep Information Afternoon for Parents – Wednesday 16 November 4pm
We have already received a number of replies for the information afternoon for parents of children making the transition from Preschool to Prep in 2012. Don’t forget to RSVP to sbeck@avondalegs.com.sg for catering and handout purposes. We look forward to seeing you there.

Avondale welcomes new receptionist
Laura Shepphard has commenced work this week as Avondale’s new receptionist following Lucy Bates’ appointment to the Enrolments team. Laura comes from the US and moved to Singapore earlier in the year. With a background in Marketing and customer service Laura is a great addition to our ‘front of house’ team. Please make her feel welcome.

Questions about Expansion

1. How will First Aid be handled?
Currently Avondale has at least ten teaching and administrative staff who are qualified in First Aid. In both the ELC and the Primary Centre there will be sick bay facilities, appropriately resourced with first aid materials and with the services of a trained member of staff to assist with primary care and supervision.

2. What will happen about canteen access and lunch orders for students and staff on the Primary Campus?
Avondale will continue to move to an online ordering system as rapidly as possible. Each day snack and lunch orders for students and staff will be delivered to the Primary Centre from the current canteen in the Early Learning Centre. Orders will be delivered prior to the commencement of recess and lunchtime.

Book Covering – Can you help?

Mrs Mathew would like a team of mums to come in and help cover books on Monday 14th November in the Art Room after lines.  Even if you have half an hour to spare it would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions, please contact Karin Hunter at karinhunter@hotmail.com.

Principal’s News

The weeks just seem to fly past at the moment. Years 3 to 6 thoroughly enjoyed their excursion to the Elves and the Shoemaker on Tuesday. The players brought this timeless children’s classic to life in an engaging and humorous manner. It was a great way for the students to gain an undertsnading of the many musical skills and theories they have been studying throughout the year. Many also gained insight and motivation for their roles in the Avondale musical soon to take to the stage.

On Thursday morning Preschool to Year 2 were entertained by a group that are fast becoming Avondale regulars. For the third year in a row Loose Cannons brought the stage in the Multi Purpose Hall to life with crazy fairytales and other humorous stories in which the students played an active part. Many choruses and “do you remember?” moments were to be heard throughout the hallways throughout the rest of the day.

Wet afternoons seem to be the order of the day at the moment as the Rainy season takes a firm hold in Singapore. When a wet weather dismissal is required, all bus students need to report to the canteen. The buses will collect students by driving between the flagpole and the front porch. All other students will be dismissed via the front porch area as usual. Could parents please assist by ensuring that the front foyer is vacated at 3pm and that a clear passageway is left from the front doors to the porch entrance so that bus students can move through quickly and safely. A reminder to that the designated carpark area for Avondale is Block 314 which can be accessed from the lower ring road. Could everyone please exercise extreme care when moving around Phoenix Park in the wet. Keeping people safe is far more important than saving a few minutes off your journey.

International Schools Cross Country
On Friday evening last, a team of 33 very keen and well trained athletes accompanied by Mrs Dundas and parent coach Jackie Fittler made their way to Bedok Reservoir for the annual International Schools Cross Country event. This is by far the biggest team that Avondale has ever entered, and also the best prepared. Congratulations to all who competed and also to the parent volunteers who have assisted their training via the parent led Running Group each Friday morning before school.  Colm Creaner did himself and his school proud by taking out 1st place in the 10 years boys competition. An outstanding effort against some very tough competition. In addition the 8 years team and the ten years team both placed second overall in their events. Avondale is beginning to make its presence felt in some significant areas in the sporting arena!

Mandarin Information Afternoon
For all parents interested in meeting the Mandarin staff and hearing more about the Mandarin program at Avondale, an information afternoon will be held in the 2W classroom on the afternoon of Monday 21 November commencing at 3:15pm and concluding by 4pm. The session will be led by Mandarin Coordinator Ms Chun Ting Hsu. Teachers Lin Xin Ping and Pei Ying Wong will also attend. If you are able to come could you please rsvp to sbeck@avondalegs.com.sg so that we can ensure sufficient copies of any handouts are available.

Parent Forum – Wednesday 23 November 7:30pm
Parents are reminded that there will be a parent forum on Avondale’s expansion plans for 2012 to be held in the Multi Purpose Hall on the evening of Wednesday 23 November at 7:30pm. Members of School Council and School Executive will be in attendance.

Dad’s Golf Weekend
Please read the attached flyer and dads, if you haven’t already signed up then please get involved! This promises to be a very memorable few days and another great dad’s event at Avondale.

AGS Golf Agenda November 2011

Expansion Plan Issues

1. How will drop off / pick up be handled?
Buses will dropp off at both campuses in the morning, beginning with the Primary Centre and then the Early Learning Centre. In the afternoons pick up times will need to be staggered by 10 to 15 minutes to allow for buses and for parents to move comfortably between the two campuses. In the afternoons buses will pick up from the Early Learning Centre first and then from the Primary Centre. Parents will be able to access both centres easily from the Block 314 carpark. Alongside Block M there is a lengthy covered area that will work very effectively as a “kiss and drop” zone and also for wet weather pick-up in the afternoons.

2. What about the playfield?
The playfield is projected to be completed by Day 1 of Term 1 in 2012. It will be accessible both from Block M (along the bottom ring road) and also via a staircase and pathway from the Early Learning Centre. The safety of students will, as always, be our number one priority and classes will be supervised by teaching staff whenever they are moving to or from the playfield space. The playfield will be located in the eastern end of the lower carpark immediately below the Spruce Tacqueria. It will provide approximately 750 sq metres of artifically grassed playing surface.
