Head of Avondale Grammar (International School in Singapore)
I hope that all Avondale families enjoyed the Hari Raya long weekend.
Healthy Food, Healthy Eating Week
The Student Representative Council (in close collaboration with the Year 5/6 School Leaders) have organised Avondale’s charity for term 3. The Local Charity we have chosen for the school is The Singapore Association of Visually Handicapped. We continue to work closely with our neighbours at Toa Payoh Rise and will tie our charity in with a Healthy Food, Healthy Eating week.
Some of the activities that we will have in Week 10 include;
• Mrs Frewen (mother of Paddy and Hamish) kindly sharing her knowledge to the children about healthy eating during one of our lunchtimes
• Badge Making
• Healthy eating poster competition organised by the Year 5/6 leaders
• Healthy Breaky Morning in classrooms – teachers will mention what children will need to bring in on the day from home in message books and school diaries
And much much more for the week
Our actual charity day in raising money for SAVH will be on Wednesday the 30th September. Children are asked to dress up in any shape or form as a food type that resembles healthy eating (i.e. carrot, tomato, apple, banana, a can of baked beans, a salad sandwich etc…). We also ask children to bring in a gold coin donation (as well as extra coins) to get involved in some of the other fun activities organised at recess and lunchtime by the SRC and Year 5 and 6 leaders.
The money raised will go towards encouraging eye-care and safety and research in the prevention and cure of blindness and related diseases.
For further information and ideas on the SAVH, please look on website http://www.savh.org.sg
We look forward to our Healthy Food, Healthy Eating week with everyone.
Soccer Matches versus Dover Court School
Well done to all soccer players on their achievements against Dover Court School this week. All children should be proud of their efforts as the matches were played in good spirit. Thank you to Mr Perkowsky for organizing the matches.
School Parties
I would just like to remind all families of school protocol regarding class parties when farwelling students leaving AGS at the conclusion of a term. It is important to respectfully and appropriately farewell students when leaving the school and this is something that is carefully organized by class teachers. Avondale is a “NUT FREE’ school and teachers of course take this into account when organising parties with their classes. If parents are wanting to celebrate the farewelling of students leaving on a further note, I would ask that arrangements are made outside of school time so that it has little impact on the school day. As you would appreciate, it is important that children stay focused on their learning until the completion of the term/year.
I appreciate your support on this matter.
Free Uniform Day
Congratulations to all children in getting behind the Saving the Trees idea led by the SRC – everyone should be commended on their efforts with the recycling campaign. Norway was the eventual winning team with the heaviest box and will be allowed to have a uniform free day next Friday.
