Student Leadership Program

Our Motto: Dig Deep – Aim High

Year 5 and 6 students are all leaders in our School. Our leadership program is designed so students have experience in decision-making, mentoring younger students, making plans and putting them into actions. They love the challenge of extra responsibility and we continue to be amazed by the level of their creativity and organisational skills.

Year 5 and 6 students carry out two leadership positions throughout the year, changing roles after Semester 1 (Term 2). There are two captains for each role in the following areas:

  • Art
  • Music
  • Photography
  • Mathematics
  • Literature/ Library
  • Journalism
  • Sports
  • Science
  • Cooking/Chef
  • ICT
  • Environmental ‘Green’ Captain

Leadership skills are developed through weekly, practical tasks instigated by the Year 5 and 6 leaders. Some initiatives culminate in special days or events such as competitions, displays and publications. Other roles involve on-going maintenance and monitoring. All this creativity and hard work contributes to making Avondale an even more dynamic school. Examples of the Year 5 and 6 leadership initiatives include science experiment displays, Easter art, lunchtime cricket, dance competitions and lunchtime IT activities.
