Extra Curricular Activities

The extra-curricular activities (ECAs) programme provides non-academic activities which complement classroom based curriculum and add breadth to the curriculum. Activities will be run by staff, specialist teachers, parents or external providers on a regular basis involving sessions outside of the normal school timetable.
General aims for ECAs are as follows:

    1. Develop the physical, emotional and social being of students;
    2. Extend learning outside the classroom-based curriculum;
    3. Cultivate creativity, co-operation and teamwork;
    4. Provide increased and diverse interaction between peers and between teaching staff and students to foster teamwork and appreciate diversity

    Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities

    Sport, recreation and play are a fun way to learn values and lessons. They promote fair play among students and teach teamwork, discipline and respect. Regular sporting activities such as swimming, athletics, gymnastics, cricket, netball and football are essential for the physical, mental, psychological and social development of students.

    is incorporated in Physical Education but it will also be used as a medium of expression in many other areas of the curriculum, for example, retelling stories and dramatic performances in Class Assembly items.

    Kavanagh Dance is an established Dance school that will expose our children to different genres of dance, including ballet, theatrical and modern jazz taught by Australian qualified C.S.T.D teachers. Each year, our students will have the opportunity to take C.S.T.D. examination in all forms of dance, as well as take part in Summer Schools and Competitions.

    Speech and Drama is an effective means of engaging children in the process of learning English language skills, including speaking, reading and writing. The fictional worlds created in drama allow students to apply new vocabulary and registers of language. By adopting a range of roles within fictional worlds, students can experiment with language and boost creativity.

    The ability to appreciate music and master an instrument builds confidence, develops listening skills, fine-tunes motor co-ordination, stimulates creativity, and provides an outlet for emotional expression. Students will be introduced to the basic theories of music, providing them with basic technical fundamentals. Advanced students will go on to master musical instruments of their choice.
    At Avondale we would look to establish this lifelong love of music by introducing programmes that enhance the students’ enjoyment and understanding of music. Performance is an important feature of the School’s music program where all students learning musical instruments will be encouraged to perform as often as possible for the rest of the school community through class concerts, assemblies, choir and concerts for parents and friends.

    Swimming at Avondale is run by a group of qualified and committed professional swimming coaches, which have over 40 years swimming and coaching experience combined. This ECA implements a complete swimming program that takes a student systematically through various levels of competence. The program is also flexible in that the swimming instructors are fully equipped to customize specific training programs to suit individual students needs and abilities.
